Hello everyone,

I'am just curious to know if my cpu (AMD 64 3500+ Socket 939) were to exceed temperatures of 60-65 degrees Celcius (C), would it then be considered to be "un-safe" to continue to run my system? I consider myself new to understanding the important concepts of running a computer safely and I'am afraid to harm it in any way. The hottest temperature I have ever gotten my CPU was 63 degrees Celcius (C). My computer specs are listed below:

Abit AV8 Socket 939 Motherboard
Enermax 480 Watt Power Supply (ATX)
2x512 PC3200 DDR Ram (1 Gig)
AMD 64 3500+ 939 (not sure of brand name)
Zalman CNPS7000a Heat sink
PNY Verto 6800 Ultra
Sound Blaster Audigy LS
Maxtor 20 Gigabyte 7200 rpm
Seagate 100 Gigabyte 7200 rpm
Bus Link CD RW 40X

Well...I was running applications such as Internet Explorer, Norton Antiviris , Downloading games, and had Winamp running all at the same time. So i guess thats almost full load? Also, if my RAM is set to 128 bit DDR400 mode, does that mean its overclocked? If I sound as if I dont make sense, it is because Im new to this sorta stuff. Advice is appreciated.

Hi Derik-welcome to HWA.

The programs and activities you mention should in no way stress your 3500. If you're getting 60+ degrees under those conditions, then something's not right.

Assuming you've assembled everything correctly, either using the thermal pad which came with the stock cooler, or a small amout of thermal paste (about the size of a grain and a half of rice) and the cooler is plugged in, then enter your Bios setup by pressing Del at the POST screen, and check you've running the Vcore at the correct voltage. Change the default settings to allow the user to control the Vcore manually, and set it at 1.5v. Then check your temps and report back.

As a comparison, using the stock HS/F, silver based thermal paste and standard clock speeds, my CPU idles at 33-35C and never goes above 44C even at full load when gaming. Even overclocked at 3800 speeds the max temp is 50C.

Surely ur mobo supports AMD cool and quiet??... Please use it!. My temperatures dropped to 37 deg C while surfing and doing regular desktop stuff and 52 deg C under full load.
This feature seems to be extremely effective. Give it a shot. Enable it in ur bios then enable APIC mode in Power the enter windows, install the cool & quiet drivers. Next select 'minimal power' under power options in windows and TA DA.. watch ur temps drop.

for the record these were my previous temps... idling 46 deg C and heavy load, 59 deg C.

Just get yourself a better Copper heat sink & fan. Also get yourself a few more case fans. AMD CPU's can handle a lot of heat, but 60 C is way too high. My 3200+ 64-Bit never hit temps like that!

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

I have a 64 BIT 3400+ MOBILE on my Compaq Presario R3000Z Custom, and idle heat is about 30-40 C (800 Mhz) When playing a game or full load I get heats accesicve of 60 C easy, I have once spotted my sensor showing 89 C while I was copying hundreds of thousands of characters in notepad ( try to do that with any proc, copying and pasting thousands of characters in word, or notepad, you won't beleive how much proc power it uses up.)

What kind of grill is it for the intake and outake fans on your case? The grill on mine was just little holes, not much, and I couldn't feel any air movement. I cut the grill out so now it's just open, and my proc temp dropped at least 8 degrees. Also, you do have at least two case fans, right? What kind of paste do you have between your heatsink and CPU? If you don't have some already, you should get some Arctic Siver 5 paste, and when you put it on, you only need to use a very little amount, because the pressure that the heatsink puts on it speads it out very much.

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.

As above, if you haven't turned on Cool and Quiet, do so, my system is running at 37 C at the moment, it tends to run anywhere between 33 and 38 depending upon what I am doing and when playing games up to about 47 - 50.

I have also run a few 3500's in cases without any fans and they still run at about 38 - 42 with surfing on the net!

"64 BIT 3400+ MOBILE on my Compaq Presario R3000Z Custom"

This is Compaq's fault for not providing proper cooling for there notebooks. If you can take it back to them & have them give you a better heatsing/fan with better grill or you yourself, go to a custom Laptop/Notebook store & try to get the best Heatsink/Fan w/ Arctic Silver 5.

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

Hi Guys,

New here and fairly new to OC'ing, but learning every day.

I just built my first system

MSI Neo2 Platinum
AMD 3500 64 939 @ 2.4Ghz (218 x 11)
Corsair Twin X XMS 3200 1024mb @ 2.5-3-3-6 latency
Aerocool HT 101 Rev2 + two 80mm fans
(Arctic Silver 5 paste used)
Geforce FX 5900 @ 425 / 750
Western Digital Caviar SE 200GB HD x 2
CoolerMaster Cavalier 3 Case + 120mm rear fan + 80mm front fan
Hiper 525w with 3 fans
Sony DVD+/- R/RW

and so far it's having no problems. The cpu is running cool at an average of 35C, and it maxes out at 42C when gaming hard, or putting the CPU under load.

The cpu cooler really does the job, I only fitted it today but I can immediately see the benefit. One of the fans is blowing and the other sucking, providing constant airflow over the copper fins. The hot air then gets caught in the huge rear fan and blown out of the back.

I'm still pushing it, but I don't want to go too fast... I'm too scared of breaking something!

So, I would say that temps of 60C are way too high. Get some thermal paste like the arctic and re-apply the heatsink, take your time and see what happens.

My 3200+ 90nm @ 2.0GHz ran about 34C to 36C with Air cooling. But now with my water, it's running @ 25C or bellow. OC'ed to 2.60GHz, it's around 31C +/- 5C with the water cooling.

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

Its not the cpu, heatsink or fans thats causing the high temps. The temps aren't even actually that high. It's the stupid Abit motherboard your using. I have the same problem and there are threads all over describing there faulty temperature readouts. They have promised a bios fix, but I belive there up to bios 1.7 and it is still not fixed...

Subtract 10-15 degrees from what your readout is and that is roughly what your temperature is really at.

Hey, thanks for this i recently got a new Abit AV8 board for gaming and when playing counter strike source on full settings it was hitting temps of 72C max, thus I got worried. I do not overclock, well not yet anyways. Oh and could some one please post a link to a site with threads on this problem previous mentioned as i wish to learn more.

Thanks

I built a sys for my boss using the Abit Board and a 3500, he was telling me today of the same problem, temps in the high 60's.

Does anyone know of any issues with incorrect Temp readings with this board, I do remember some abit boards having this problem in the past, I was thinking perhaps this has not been corrected yet?

i can second that!
My 'Guru Clock' shows that my room temp is 27 degrees, even though its barely 20.
My 3000+ runs at 50-55 idle and 60ish when under load. Highest i've seen it is 65 degrees.
i'm using amd stock fan.

The Temps seem too high for the Athlon 64. Try upgrading your Heatsink & Fan.

System was running at 50C idle, 71C under load with stock cooler. I updated the BIOS to 1.7 but did not make any difference. I decided to install a Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu cooler. When I removed the standard cooler the processor came straight out of the socket with it (this should not happen). I seperated them and cleaned the thermal pad residue off the chip with acetone and applied some pressure when I reinstalled it & used the thermal paste that came with the Zalman. When I booted up the temperature was the same, but after resetting the CMOS jumper temp readings dropped to 28C idle and 36C under load. The high readings were most likley caused by the Processor not being seated properly.
