I want to get a blu-ray rom player in the least but was thinking of getting a burner. I was looking at prices of blu-ray blank discs though and was wondering.... How many GB's is a blu-ray movie; do I need to buy dual layer discs, or will they fit on single layer (<25GB)?
thx,
df

Not a direct answer, but you may wish to read this first. Note that high-capacity HDD prices have come down even further since this post.

So he should get an Hd-dvd/Blu-ray burner? Just so you know burning a blu-ray disc takes approx 1:30 mins or even 2 hours I've seen on benchmarks. It's slow as hell. It would be interesting to know how much space a blu-ray movie takes, maybe if compressed it can fit on a dual layer disc, now wouldn't that be interesting?

Most movie DVDs these contain a bunch of crap I never watch: previews of other movies, subtitles, multiple languages, special comments, multiple angles, deleted scenes, etc.

When you take those away, I bet in some cases you would eliminate 50% of the storage requirements... especially when I see things on the box like, "Now contains over 6 HOURS of new material!!!!"
I just now took a look at a NEW-release movie DVD I recently bought. It shows 7.2GB of storage was used. However, looking at the .VOB files, and figuring out which ones were actually movie-related, it turns out that only 3.8GB were actually used by movie content (including Dolby sound). That's 53%. That's 47% filler. I would guess Blu-Ray would be about the same percentages.

That's definitely not what I would suggest. I am an advocate of using a high-capacity disk drive(s) (portable, if you need portability) instead of optical media for high-capacity requirements. My demonstration in the referenced post of the cost, size, and durability advantages of HDD v. especially Blu-Ray optical media is substantial.

Being able to plug a portable HDD into just about any computer using just about any major OS these days doesn't hurt either.

edit- to clarify my position on the 'extra' material added on DVDs to a simple movie. I'm sure that filler material is of interest to some people (maybe like 5% of the market?)...but not to me. I buy my DVDs to watch the movie...period. Also added analysis of a new movie DVD.

I, too, can't answer that specific question. What I would like to mention though is that it might not be possible to copy movies because of content-protection methods built in to the disks, players, and burners. I'm not saying it is impossible but I highly doubt it is easy.

AnyDvd cracked it a month after it's release, It works in the background doing the job automatically after inserting a dvd.
I have anydvd and it has cracked every security out of every dvd I've put on my dvd drive and it updates very frequently.

If you look on the AVS Forums, you will find a step by step procedure on how to burn a HD DVD or Blu-Ray movie on a Double Layer DVD with no loss in Picture/Audio Quality. It’s quite time consuming and IMO not worth the time.

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)
