So I've recently replaced my 2GB of G.SKILL DDR500 with 4GB of G.SKILL DDR400 ... yay! :D

I changed the multiplier on the memory to keep the memory just at DDR400 speeds and still keeping my CPU at 2.8GHz. Everything works great, I let Memtest86+ (BIOS integrated) run overnight, ran 9.5 hours with no errors. I let Orthos run on both cores overnight the next night, ran 12 hours with no errors. Good times.

But ... every time I try to fire up CPU-Z 1.46, I end up with a BSOD. The ever-not-so-helpful kind with just a blue screen and no text whatsoever. CPU-Z used to fire up fine before. I set everything back to stock and gave it a few runs, same BSOD. WTF I say? I would assume that it's the memory if it wasn't working perfectly in every other area.

are you running 4x 1GB sticks or 2x 2GB sticks? if you're running 4 sticks try using just the new memory and opening CPU-Z and see if you still get the BOSD.

It's all 'new' memory. I sold my DDR500 and now have 4 sticks of DDR400. I'll give it a go with 2 sticks at a time right now, and report back. :|

Tried 1 and 2 sticks at a time, different sticks and different slots ... same BSOD on them all.

I assume you also tried going back to the old RAM and it works fine?

Well ... I would but ... no. :( I sold it and it's already been shipped to a far away land (also known as Wisconsin). So some things point to the memory (in that it's the only component that's changed recently) and some things don't (in that everything else with the memory works just fine :/).

Then you shall be left with only fond memories of running CPU-Z, never again will you experience it's boxy informativeness. Perhaps I will post a youtube video of me running CPU-Z so you can go back and reminess of days gone by from time to time. :)

So its just CPU-Z giving this error??

Have you tried an older version of CPU-Z?

Do games etc run ok?

I haven't tried an older version, suppose it couldn't hurt though.

The only games I've fired up since getting the new memory are UT2004 and GTA:SA, both of which run fine.

I was testing some old G.Skill memory the other day that my brother bought from a friend for real cheap, and within a few seconds it through up over 6,000 errors in memtest. Needless to say, they are currently on their way to California for an RMA.

I wouldn't doubt its an issue with the version of CPU-z that you are using. Some versions have had weird issues with certain CPUs and motherboards.

Just for grins, you might try changing some of the parms in the cpuz.ini file.

Definitely sounds more like a bug with CPU-Z than anything else.

I'll try fiddling, but I don't really want to cause 35 BSOD's and fux0r something up. :~

I know this is a way stupid question, but have you tried to de-install CPU-z, reboot, then reinstall CPU-z?
The reason this seems stupid to me is that if I recall CPU-z is a pretty str8 foward application, but when all else fails.....

CPU-Z does not install, this is why I definitely think its a bug within the app more than anything else.

I'm currently running 1.39, and no issues whatsoever.

The only reason really to update to a later version is for processor support, hence my suggestion of running an older version.

>> Re: :~ CPU-Z BSOD with new memory
Well, I'm currently in contact with Franck Delattre, CPU-Z's author. He's sending me beta and debug versions to try, some of which have worked with varying degrees of success. My memory it seems isn't the problem. I just hadn't tried CPU-Z in a while until I got my new memory, so I had just assumed it was the problem.

Dublin, I would use an older version, but the Validation system no longer accepts dumps from anything prior to 1.45. :X Still a good suggestion for getting basic info though.

Woo ... so 1.47 fixed it, if anybody else had this problem. :)
