Hi guys , I just built my new pc with my friend and everything is pretty much stable and sorted. I knew that some people were having trouble with the E8400's temp but was assured it was a bios issue. Im currently using the stock cooler and my case is really well ventilated (Antec P182). Ive used over 5 different temp monitoring programs including realtemp, coretemp and the asus PCprobe and every time it states that my pc goes from idle at around 50-60oC on each core to over 100oC under load. The cooler is properly attached (didnt use my own thermal paste but it should only effect the temp by 2-5oC max) My motherboard (Asus P5KC) has the very latest bios version 1105. ive ordered a freezer 7 pro to help the problem but surely temperatures shouldnt be this dangerously high with the stock cooler properly applied. Any help on this would be seriously valued

Would it be safe to try and play counter strike ( or any other game) now, or shall i wait to sort it all out

Cheers

well if you go into bios, then what are the temperatures shown there? should say under "pc health status" or somethin like that...

i'd say give it a go, u can set it a temperature shutdown value at like 65-70 degrees and see if it actually shuts down, this is using the bios's own temp reader and not dependent on other programs like coretemp etc...

the bios reads 127oc on startup :/

i just opened her up and the heatsink isnt even warm to the touch and realtemp read a minimum of -32 oC for one core

When you are getting reports of extremely high temps, and yet you have a cool heatsink, it could either mean that it isn't mounted properly to the CPU, or the temperature sensing/reporting sub-system isn't working right...you may be getting false readings of high temps.

edit-minor clarify

Have you got the latest BIOS?

My readings were way out when I installed my E6750, but after I got the latest BIOS, my readings were normal.

yep, bios are all current. i just played company of heroes with max settings aswell as tf2 and medieval total war 2 and there were no problems whatsoever regardless of 100oC readings :/

I am assuming it is just an incorrect reading.

I have no idea if this has to do with it, but when the E8400 was first released there were temperature reading problems all over the place where in most cases, BIOS updates did not rectify the situation. People were seeing readings very similar to yours with 100+ C core temperatures.

Perhaps you are also having the same problem as the vast majority did with their E8400s at release date?

probably man, i mean 100oc to - 32 isnt even possible without the core being destroyed anywho

thats like putting the core on full load without a heatsink then straight into a vat of liquid nitrogen :P

ill keep as i am and hope everything stays stable, if anyone has any info on this ,let me know

nah ure right, if you can play all those games maxed out with no problems, then the temps are whack, i got the Arctic freezer 7 on my e6600 @ 3.2ghz its a very decent cooler, does the job well so its always gonna be a good step over the stock heatsink just in case...

You could try a few different temp programs.

SpeedFan might give you some flexibility with mobo sensor configuration that many programs don't offer.

Just a question, does the BIOS have to support the type pf CPU properly to get the correct temperature reading? When I got my setup, my motherboard didn't fully support this CPU, I mean, like, I didn't have any crashes or such, but I had temperature readings that were WAY out, I knew this by flashing to a later version where it said 'support for E6750, E6850" etc etc, and my problem was gone.

Maybe if/once they bring out once for the 8400, it will tell you the correct temperature.

ok update ! the freezer 7 pro reduced idle temps from 60oC to 30oC

Ill never use a stock cooler on a cpu ever again !

What? Something's missing. The last thing you reported is your temperatures were all over the place...nothing was stable. And now by replacing an HSA your CPU temps are stable?

Something doesn't make sense here.

Like, either you fixed the temp reporting problem, and/or your stock HSA wasn't installed properly to begin with.

Can you please provide more info?

it was incredibly strange, the original cooler was fitted perfectly with great airflow , the only change made was the freezer 7 from the stock. Dosent make any sense, I know :/

either the freezer 7 is magic or there is some strange issue with the stock coolers, i have no idea why it was happening

Dan,
Even with the proper compond, and cooler, it DOES seem that the issue is with the way the HSF was locked down on the CPU at this point.
I don't believe the variables you were talking about, and niether do you.
SOMETHING major Changed in the Thermal transfer, and the deltas you're seeing should NEVER happen with a proper HSF installation.
100C? You wouldn't melt the substraight, but it would NEVER work at those tempuratures for more than a few seconds! The procs would shut down or burn out!

Sometimes a HSA can look properly installed when it has some problem or other. The problem is sometimes gaps in the paste or not enough paste. Believe it or not, even too much paste can be a major problem. It doesn't take much to make things behave pretty oddly.

At times HSA mounting almost seems more art and luck than science.

Sometimes a small defect in the HSA-to-CPU interface plate can make a considerable difference.

Glad things are sorted. Have fun.
