My CPU reads the following on idle; it jumps between 30-36c celsius

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 CPU Cooler
Old Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste
Antec 900 (fan speed low setting) case with default/stock fans in original place

Is this right?

Antec 900 Case w/ Stock Fans
EP45-DS3L Motherboard
8800GTS 512MB Video Card
Q6600 @ 3.2GHZ CPU
2GB Corsair DDR2 667MHZ Dual Channel Ram
2x 80GB Seagate HDDs
Corsair TX 650w Power Supply

Anything under 40C I would consider good. No reason to get concerned until it heads north of 50C and not worth doing something about it until it gets past 60C.

My laptop reads 80 C at idle and over 100 C on load. I have to be careful not to touch the bottom of it! I wonder if I can cook an egg on it....

hmmmm..:P

As to why it is so hot, I think I got defective RAM.

Unlikely. A fan may have died or the cooling system in the laptop is poorly designed.
