I have a 7500 zalman cooler. This was my first build so I used a bit too much arctic silver when I initially mounted it. A good portion of thermal grease squished and spread onto the the bottom half of the heatsink between the fins. I can't seem to get it all out with a toothbrush and alchohol. I want to try putting the bottom half in a liquid solution for a bit and perhaps that would eat the thermal compound off the copper or dilude it?

Any suggestions?

People report isopropyl alcohol works, the lower percentage of water the better.

Otherwise, I've also read people successfully used one of the citrus-based cleaners like 'Citrus Orange' or 'Simple Green'.

Of course, it will depend whether you're using just AS or AS with adhesive.

For cleaning other contaminants, acetone or carburetor cleaner work well. Carb cleaners often contain a blend of methanol and compounds such as MEK or Tolulol. Use adequate ventilation, handling, and fire safety precautions.

Thanks for the reply. I just used AS, no adhesive. My idea is to fill up a small bowl with Isopropyl alchohol, dip the heatsink into it, and leave it in over night. Then in morning use a can of compressed air or a water hose to wash all the thermal grease off. Think the alchohol alone will be enough to get the thermal grease to loosen off the copper? Or should I try one of those citrus based cleaners which might have a greater chemical effect on the grease?

You're welcome. Sorry I just got back to you on this, but I hope it's not too late?

Leaving it over-night will allow the alcohol to evaporate and might be enough to fill a small room with enough "gas" to be explosive/flammable. So don't do this near any open flames, spark sources, etc. Definitely don't smoke.
