Of course you can. A fan's a fan. All the manufacturer's done is bought the same 80mm
fans in bulk, put an Intel Label on them and screwed them onto a heatsink.

So, what you're saying is you missed the word "How" off the front of your topic heading? ;)

Does the fan you've removed from the heat exchanger not have a screw hole in each corner? If it does, you should find it lines up with the mounting holes in the case; just hold it up to the mounting point to see - if the holes line up, just screw the fan into place; there's nothing special about them. Then you're just left looking at the logistics of wiring the fan to the motherboard in order to supply energy to it; again, it'll use the existing fitting - there's nothing special about it just because it was supplied as a heat-exchanger fan.

Ah, now that's a much more interesting project! :D You'll need to fashion some sort of bracket, ideally cut from something you can mount the fan onto (aluminium, perspex, and old computer case side, wood, nougat ;) ) and then fix that to the inside of your case. Two things you're gonna need to take into account are:

1. What physical features of the fan you can mount the bracket to, i.e. lugs and fittings that connected it to the heat exchanger, as well as remembering to leave a hole for it to draw air through (hey, I've SEEN it done!:D)
2. Any physical features of the case that need to be accounted for; i.e. things you'll need to avoid blocking, trapping wires, etc.

Obviously, only you can see what some of those are, but once you start to design the bracket, it'll become apparent fairly soon what it is you need to do.

Yeah you could use that as a case fan if you could figure out a way to secure it. It won't be pretty, but you could probably rig something up.

haha waste not want not ! I might as well squeeze a bit more airflow from my already ice cool case :) I just realised that my old compaq pc was lying around so i tore into it to find a nice 80mm fan that runs silent whih i can salvage. Is there any possible use for any other old bits in my compaq, are there any useful parts in there that I may be able to utilise ?
Its just an everage 2003 p4 build from the local pc world so there are no frills

Seriously, I wouldn't bother. Those stock fans aren't even that great in regards to performance. I would just pick up some ball bearing case fans of decent RPM and be done with it. XD

Edit: You can usually use optical drives and hard drives from older computers. Sometimes you can salvage expansion cards too but usually they are so behind par, they aren't worth it.

Edit: Edit: Here's a good place to pick up fans in UK:

Oh that fan. Man you can get proper case fans for a few quid. They're cheap as
nuts. I wouldn't bother with that fan..

peel off that label, slap some super glue on that sucker and stick it to the inside of the rear case vents. I use a 12V automobile vacuum on the front of my case. I call it my "Land Shark Super Duper Cooling System". It swivels so I don't have to worry about floor debris and is loads of fun to stick the cats on it and spin them.

although size is not the issue the principle is the same....

You can fit anything into anything as long as you have enough cubic dollars.

I used my heatsink fans from all my old processors to build a helicopter back pack.
It actually works!

If you were adventurous, you couldget a dremel and cut a circular hole into your case, that lines up with the round mount of the fan, and secure it in place using glue, or epoxy or something.

Or even better, keep the heatsink intact, and mod its bracket to fit your video card. Would keep it nice and cool (though a little bulky)

why not just keep it to one side if you dont "need it " in your ice cool system , in case the other processor cooler breaks ? kind of a back up if you like
